Themes in “The Lekki Headmaster” by Kabir Alabi Garba

“The Lekki Headmaster” addresses many themes including leadership in education, the japa syndrome in Nigeria, corruption in the educational system, etc. Here is a discussion of the themes in “The Lekki Headmaster”.

1. Educational Leadership:

The story centers on the life of Mr. Adebepo Adewale, an educational leader at Stardom Schools. His contributions to the development of the school, the staff, and students, and his masterful skills in managing conflicts and school affairs were evident throughout the story. It is clear that he is a dynamic Principal who cares about the advancement of education and the lives of the people he works with and he was portrayed as such throughout the story.

2. The Japa Syndrome:

The novel portrays the growing need of Nigerians to migrate to other countries in search of a better life. It reflects the prevalent issue in the country when the novel was written. The details of what the migration looks like are outlined in Chapter Three. Bepo, although patriotic, preferred to build his nation rather than join in building another man’s nation that was already thriving, but still had to migrate for the sake of his family. This was the source of his distress described in Chapter One.

3. Corruption In The Educational System:

Some issues mentioned in the novel indicate that corruption can affect the educational system. Such issues highlighted include examination malpractice and misuse of school resources.

The effect is also felt in policies relating to students’ enrollment and fee structure as the privileged voice their opinion of not wanting their children to study with people below their social class after the school fees were adjusted downward.

5. Integrity vs. Compromise:

Mr. Adebepo Adewale is faced with this choice on many occasions throughout the novel. He was faced with the dilemma of the school choosing between honest deals or taking shortcuts as he dealt with issues relating to corrupt practices in the school.
