You’re at a hotel, an Airbnb, or a friend’s place. The movie ended, you grabbed your things, and you only realised on the way out that you never signed out of Netflix. Or you’re selling your old smart TV, or a relative keeps landing in your profile and messing up your recommendations.
Logging out of Netflix on a TV should be a one-button job. It isn’t, because the sign-out option is tucked away in a menu that most people never open. This guide covers the standard method, the fixes for when the option is missing, and how to log out from your phone when you can’t reach the TV.
The quick answer
On most TVs, open Netflix, press left on your remote to open the side menu, scroll to the bottom, and choose Get Help. Then select Sign out and confirm with Yes. That’s the whole process on most sets.
Netflix’s own help page for TVs and streaming players describes going to the Netflix home screen, going left to open the menu, then selecting Get Help, Sign out, and Yes at the bottom. netflix
If you can’t find Get Help, keep reading.
Method 1: Sign out using the Get Help menu
This works on most modern smart TVs and streaming devices, including Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense, Roku TV, Google TV and Fire TV.
- Open the Netflix app and wait for the profile screen or home screen to load.
- Press left on your remote (or press Back) to open the menu on the left side.
- Scroll down to Get Help. It’s usually the last item in the list.
- Select Sign out.
- Confirm by selecting Yes.
You’ll land back on the Netflix welcome screen, where the next person can sign in with their own account.
One thing to know: a menu that shows only Switch Profiles and Exit Netflix is not a sign-out. Exiting just closes the app and leaves you logged in.
Method 2: If you don’t see Get Help or Sign out
Menus change between TV brands and app versions, so this happens a lot. Try these fixes in order.
Check Settings. Netflix says that if Get Help isn’t there, you should go up and select Settings, where Sign out is often listed instead. netflix
Use the secret remote sequence. This is Netflix’s official fallback, and it works like a cheat code. On your remote, press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. A menu should appear, and from there you can choose Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate. Press the buttons steadily, without long pauses. netflix
Look for Deactivate. Older LG sets with Netcast or Premium menus use the word Deactivate instead of Sign out. It does the same thing.
If the screen shows an error, select More Details, then pick Sign out or Reset.
Method 3: Sign out on specific devices
The steps shift slightly depending on what you’re using.
Roku and Roku TV. Open Netflix, press Back, and look for the gear icon on the right. Select it, then choose Sign out and confirm. Roku and TCL sets also follow the Get Help route in most cases.
Apple TV. Open Netflix, press Back (or Menu on older remotes), move left to your profile icon, then select Get Help, Sign out and Yes. Deleting and reinstalling the app also signs you out.
Amazon Fire TV. The Get Help path above applies. If it isn’t there, try the Settings route or the remote sequence.
Samsung. Some Samsung menus are stripped down. In one hands-on test of a Samsung screen, the menu offered Switch Profiles, Get Help and Exit Netflix, but no Sign out option. If you hit this, use the Settings route, the remote sequence, or the remote sign-out method below.
LG. Newer LG TVs follow the Get Help path. Older ones use Deactivate.
Method 4: Log out remotely from your phone or computer
This is the one most people need. You left your account on a TV you can no longer reach, and you don’t want a stranger watching on your plan.
Netflix introduced a feature called Manage Access and Devices for exactly this. It lets account owners remotely log out of devices they don’t recognise or no longer want signed in. TechCrunch
On a computer:
- Go to Netflix.com and sign in.
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner and choose Account.
- Under Security & Privacy, click Manage access and devices.
- Find the TV in the list and click Sign out next to it.
On a phone: Open the Netflix app, go to your account settings, and tap Manage access and devices. Then tap Sign out under the device you want to remove.
The list shows each device and its type, so you can spot the hotel TV or the Roku you forgot about. Remote sign-out usually works within minutes, though some TVs take a bit longer to catch up.
Method 5: Sign out of every device at once
If you don’t know which device is the problem, or you think someone else has your login, don’t hunt through the list. In your account settings, under Security & Privacy, choose Sign out of all devices.
Changing your password also forces every device to sign in again. If you suspect someone is using your account without permission, do both: sign out everywhere, then set a new password you haven’t used before.
Will signing out delete my profiles or watch history?
No. Signing out only disconnects that device from your account. Your profiles, My List, and viewing history stay put, and everything is there when you sign back in.
When you should log out of Netflix on a TV
Most people only think about this by accident. These are the situations where it matters most:
- Hotels, rentals and Airbnbs. Shared TVs are the most common place accounts get left logged in.
- A friend’s or family member’s place. It’s easy to forget after a long movie night.
- Selling or giving away a TV. Sign out before it leaves your hands, and do a factory reset if the TV offers one.
- Sharing a TV with housemates. Logging out stops people mixing up profiles and ruining your recommendations.
- Troubleshooting. Netflix itself suggests signing out and back in as a first fix when the app misbehaves on a TV.
Common problems and quick fixes
The Sign out button does nothing. Restart the TV and try again. If that fails, use the remote sequence or the remote sign-out method.
I can’t find the Netflix menu at all. Make sure you’re on the Netflix home screen rather than the profile picker, then press left or Back.
I signed out but the TV still shows my account. Give it a few minutes, then restart the app. If it still shows your profile, sign out of all devices from your account page.
The TV is in a hotel and I’ve already checked out. Use Manage access and devices from your phone. You don’t need to be near the TV.
FAQ
How do I log out of Netflix on my TV without the remote?
Use your phone or computer. Go to Account, then Manage access and devices, and sign the TV out from there.
Is signing out the same as exiting the app?
No. Exiting closes the app, but your account stays logged in on that TV.
Can I sign out of just one TV?
Yes. The device list under Manage access and devices lets you remove a single device.
Does Netflix log me out automatically?
Not reliably. TVs often stay signed in for a long time, so don’t count on it, especially on shared sets.
Why does my TV have no Sign out button?
Menus vary by brand and software version. Try Settings, the Up-Up-Down-Down remote sequence, or remote sign-out from your account.
Final thoughts
Logging out of Netflix on a TV takes about ten seconds once you know where to look. Start with Get Help, then Sign out. If the option isn’t there, try Settings or the remote sequence. If you can’t reach the TV, sign it out from your phone through Manage access and devices.
It’s worth making this a habit whenever you watch on a TV that isn’t yours. It protects your account, keeps your recommendations clean, and saves you from finding a stranger’s viewing history in your profile.
