Hausa Novel: Where to Read Real Hausa Novels Online, Download Safely and Buy

To read a Hausa novel online, start with reading apps such as Wattpad, ArewaBooks and Okadabooks, where Hausa writers publish serials and finished stories, some free and some paid.

For classics like Ruwan Bagaja or Shaihu Umar, look to bookshops, libraries and English translations. Be cautious with “free PDF” sites, which often host unauthorised copies.

What counts as a Hausa novel?

A Hausa novel is a long work of fiction written in the Hausa language. The tradition has two big strands:

  • The early novels (1930s onward). These came out of a literary competition organized under colonial rule. Rupert East launched it in late 1933, and Abubakar Imam won with Ruwan Bagaja (“The Curing Water”). It is generally treated as the first Hausa novel. Wikipedia
  • Littattafan soyayya (from the late 1980s). This is the “love literature” movement. It is also called Kano market literature, and it is mostly written by women and often focuses on romance and family life. Wikipedia

Many readers searching “Hausa novel” want the second kind, but the first matters for context, so this guide covers both.

Wattpad hosts stories in many languages, with millions of free stories in over 25 languages. Hausa-language fiction appears there too. One listing in my research was Rabin Raina, described as a Hausa/English novel with a little English mixed in. I haven’t read it, so I mention it only as an example of the format, not a recommendation. Search Wattpad for Hausa words like “labari” or “soyayya” to find more. googlewattpad

ArewaBooks (Arewa Books Publishers) advertises Hausa and English stories, both ongoing series and completed ones. A related app, ArewaPen, first appeared on the App Store in October 2025. Because the ratings I saw were few and middling, try the free version before committing time or money. applemwm

Okadabooks is a Nigerian ebook platform that advertises a library of over 20,000 books. Its founder has said in an interview that Hausa writers use it and many readers pay to read their stories. That is useful for supporting authors directly. appfollowpremiumtimesng

A Daily Trust interview with a developer of a Hausa reading and publishing app noted that the app is free on Google Play. The article’s headline doesn’t name the app in what I saw, so search “Hausa reading app” in the Play Store to find similar tools. dailytrust

Radio and audio

The genre isn’t only on paper. Kano-based Express FM broadcasts littattafan soyayya stories five days a week, and audio versions on video platforms are common. Treat these the same way as PDFs: ask whether the narrator or channel has the author’s permission. Wikipedia

“Hausa novel PDF” and “complete Hausa novel”: what’s safe?

Searches like “Hausa novel PDF download” and “complete Hausa novel” are popular, but there is no single authorized source for them. Here is how I’d approach it:

  1. Prefer the author’s own page or an authorized platform. If an author posts a story on Wattpad or sells it on an app, that is the legitimate route.
  2. Be skeptical of “free complete novel” pages. Many are unauthorized copies of someone’s paid work. Several of the pages I found for named titles looked auto-generated, with generic text and no verifiable author.
  3. Don’t install unknown APKs or sign up for “download” sites just to get one novel.
  4. Remember that classics are usually still in copyright. Modern editions of Ruwan Bagaja and Shaihu Umar are published or sold. I could not confirm a legitimate free full-text edition of any, so I won’t point you to one.
  5. If you can only find it as an unlabelled PDF, buy it or ask the author. Many Hausa writers are reachable on social media.

Supporting authors matters here. During the 2010s, some writers were able to make a living from their work, which only works if readers pay. Wikipedia

Hausa novels worth knowing

I’m only listing titles I could verify in published sources. This is a starting point, not a “best of” ranking, since I haven’t read all of them.

The classics

  • Ruwan Bagaja by Abubakar Imam. It won the 1930s competition and is often called the first Hausa novel. It is an adventure story, and scholars have written about it in English as “In Search of the Water of Bagaja.” Wikipedia
  • Gandoki by Muhammadu Bello Kagara. The translation bureau published it alongside the early novels. Wikipedia
  • Magana Jari Ce by Abubakar Imam. The title means “Speaking is Profitable” and it was published later by the same bureau. Wikipedia
  • Shaihu Umar by Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who later became Nigeria’s first Prime Minister. It’s a short novel about a boy kidnapped into the slave trade. A Publishers Weekly review describes the plot: young Umar is separated from his mother and is kidnapped. An English translation by Mervyn Hiskett is listed by Markus Wiener Publishers. publishersweeklymarkuswiener
  • Tauraruwar Hamada (“Star of the Desert”) by Saidu Ahmed Daura. I found only a rare-book listing: a Gaskiya (Zaria) printing from 1959. It’s good evidence the title exists, but not a practical way to read it. commoncrowbooks

These are the books that show up in school reading lists and literary studies. A University of Wisconsin language-resource page also describes a classic from this era as a learner-friendly introduction to Hausa storytelling, proverbs and moral lessons, though the page snippet I saw doesn’t name which book, so I won’t either. unizin

Hausa romantic novels (littattafan soyayya)

If you want Hausa love stories, start with the genre’s pioneers and best-known names:

  • Balaraba Ramat Yakubu published her first novel in 1987 and has been one of the bestselling Hausa authors since. Her best-known book, Alhaki Kuykuyo Ne (1990), was published in English as Sin Is a Puppy That Follows You Home. The English edition is described as an Islamic soap opera with polygamous households and black magic, and as the first full-length novel by a woman translated from Hausa to English. • Hafsat Abdulwaheed, whose 1970 novel So Aljannar Duniya is described as a “precursor” of the genre. Wikipedia
  • Bilkisu Funtuwa, whose novels include Allura cikin ruwa (1994), Wa ya san gobe? (1996) and Ki yarda di ni (1997). Wikipedia
  • Ado Ahmad Gidan Dabino, whose novel In da so da kauna is reported to have sold over 200,000 copies. Wikipedia
  • Farida Ado, a writer who was named on TIME’s 2018 Next Generation Leaders list. Wikipedia

Some of these books were first sold as small pamphlets in markets rather than through bookshops, so tracking down print copies can take effort.

What these stories are actually about. Despite the “romance” label, many deal with social issues. Topics include polygamy, child marriage, forced marriage, divorce and women’s lives in purdah. That is partly why the genre was controversial. A Kano governor publicly burned copies in 2007, but it has since drawn serious academic interest. WikipediaWikipedia

New writing: the BBC Hausa short story prize

If you want recent fiction rather than novel-length books, the BBC Hausa contest for women is useful. It began in 2016 and accepts stories of 1,000–1,500 words. Winners include: 21stcenturychronicle

  • Safiyya Jibril, whose story Ya Mace (“The Girl-Child”) won the 2018 edition. pressreader
  • Safiyya Ahmad, whose story Maraici won in 2019. thecable
  • Maryam Umar, a law student whose story Rai da Cuta (“Life and Sickness”) won in 2020. newscentraltv

These are short stories, not novels, so they are a low-risk way to sample modern Hausa writing.

Hausa novels in English

Non-Hausa speakers have limited options:

  • Sin Is a Puppy That Follows You Home by Balaraba Ramat Yakubu, translated by Aliyu Kamal and published by the Indian publisher Blaft. Scholar Carmen McCain reviewed it and noted some flaws in the translation but called it a good read overall. carmenmccain
  • Shaihu Umar, translated by Mervyn Hiskett (see above).
  • Abridged school editions of early novels exist. McCain notes that Ruwan Bagaja and Gandoki have been abridged and translated for the Nigerian school curriculum. carmenmccain

For learners, reading a short Hausa story alongside its English summary is a good way to build vocabulary.

How to spot a fake or low-quality “Hausa novel” page

Hausa novel searches attract thin, auto-generated pages. Signs to watch for:

  • No named author, publisher or year, or an author box with placeholder fields.
  • Vague claims like “profound impact on readers” with no plot details.
  • A “Download” button before any actual information.
  • Titles you can’t find on Wikipedia, a publisher page, a library catalogue or an author’s own profile.

When in doubt, search the title plus the word “author” and see whether a real person claims it.
